Today’s Internet marketer has to do more than keyword research to determine what target area of the economy they want to focus on at their website.

At the Authority Site Center (ASC) they also focus on competition research.

The idea is to take your top 10 keywords and look the top 10 sites on three different search engines to evaluate what are called "holes "that you may attack with your website.

You will be looking to see if your competition provides features and benefits such as:

  • a user forum
  • video
  • audio
  • Products or other monetization options
  • RSS feeds
  • a pleasing professional design
  • quality user experience

There are other aspects you should also be evaluating.

With the numbers mentioned above there will be about 300 links or sites to check

When I started with ASC, they did not have a spreadsheet or other tracking method to gather this information so I developed my own.

The video below shows how to setup the spreadsheet and begin your niche competition research.

I think you can see that if you just focus on the areas that the spreadsheet focuses on you won’t be bouncing all over the Internet surfing instead of doing your research.

You can download the template of the spreadsheet right here. Niche Competition Research Organizer

You can also get a free 30 day trial of ClipMate software, which speeds up the process.

    Hi David,

Great post and very helpful utility.

I have the spreadsheet up in front of me on my laptop and I wish I knew how to use excel the way you do - superb. Sam of ASC is right in his praise.

    Keep up the good work.

Hi David, Thanks for sharing this. Huge time saver… and as a fellow ASCer, market research is a necessary part of building your authority site. Thanks, Walt
